About Us
Who is Builders Care Tallahassee?
Builders Care Tallahassee is a nonprofit organization dedicated to the renewal and revitalization of Tallahassee's poorest neighborhoods. By coming alongside city government, law enforcement, and local inner-city churches, Builders Care seeks to unify the community through home repair and improvement and make real progress in helping our city's disadvantaged. Our assistance extends to all people, regardless of beliefs, gender, or ethnicity.
In partnership with people like you, Builders Care seeks to tackle the root causes of poverty in our city through acts of service that uphold a person's dignity and self worth. Builders Care works with local churches, corporations, and civic organizations in order to utilize volunteer time and resources.
In 2004, Builders Care (formerly CPR) spearheaded 11 different projects ranging from replacing flooring in the trailer of an elderly couple to building a fence for an autistic boy. A total of over 125 volunteers have come out to help on these projects.
Poverty in Tallahassee
According to the City of Tallahassee, the South Monroe sector is recognized as part of the historic core of the city. It represents an incredible diversity of race and economics. The U.S. Census Bureau reports that 47% of its residents are African American, and 48% are white. Over 6,000 are below the poverty level, yet the neighborhood sits adjacent to some of the wealthiest homes in the city. The individual poverty rate is double the national average, while as little as one block away, the median family income is 16% higher than the rest of the state's median. Marked by a loss of population and a decrease in home ownership, the community has been in decline. Aging homes and deteriorating economics suit this community to revitalization, and as a result, it has become a focus of the work of Builders Care.
